Our Lady of Guadalupe – Mother of the Americas

Our Lady of Guadalupe – Mother of the Americas

Our Lady of Guadalupe – Mother of the Americas

On December 12, the Church joyfully celebrates Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the most beloved Marian titles in the world. Her story is a profound reminder of God’s closeness, especially to the poor, the vulnerable, and those seeking hope.

In 1531, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a humble Indigenous man, St. Juan Diego, on the hill of Tepeyac near present-day Mexico City. Speaking to him in his native language, she revealed her deep love for all her children and asked that a church be built in that place. As a sign for the bishop, Mary instructed Juan Diego to gather roses—miraculously blooming in winter—inside his cloak. When he opened his tilma, the flowers fell to the ground, revealing the extraordinary image of Our Lady imprinted on the fabric.

That image, still preserved today, portrays Mary as a tender, humble mother, clothed with the sun and standing upon the moon. Her features and dress reflect both Indigenous and Spanish cultures, showing her as a mother to all people. Through this miraculous event, millions in the Americas came to embrace the Gospel.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is known as the Patroness of the Americas, the Star of the New Evangelization, and the Protector of the Unborn. Her message continues to inspire: a call to unity, compassion, and trust in God's mercy. She reminds us that, no matter our circumstance, we are seen, loved, and held close by a Mother who never abandons her children.

As we honor Our Lady of Guadalupe, may we place our parish, our families, and our world under her maternal care, praying with confidence the words she spoke to Juan Diego:

“Am I not here, I who am your Mother?”

Funeral Mass for Francis “Frank” Paslawski

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Francis “Frank” Paslawski on December 5, 2025. Born on the family farm in southeast Saskatchewan, Frank grew into a man known for his love of the outdoors, his dedication to family, and his generous spirit.

In 1958, Frank married Verna Schmitz, and together they built a beautiful life in Calgary and later in High River. Frank worked with Greyhound for over 25 years, embracing the open road and the many friendships formed along the way.

A man of many gifts, Frank built the family home with his own hands, earned his pilot’s license, played multiple instruments by ear, volunteered his musical talents with “Reg and Friends,” and was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed woodworking, coached and played various sports, and shared numerous mountain adventures with his beloved Arabian horse, Okie. Frank also cherished the years spent sailing with Verna and their children along the North Pacific coast.

Deeply committed to his community, Frank generously volunteered at church, the High River Community Garden, Sheppard Family Park, and anywhere help was needed. His greatest joy was his family, and he was a loyal and enthusiastic supporter at every one of his children’s and grandchildren’s activities.

Frank is lovingly remembered by his wife of 67 years, Verna; their children Danny (Wanda), Kerry (Monica), Cheryl (Jim) Munro, and Pat (Caroline); and nine grandchildren—Laura, Leah, Lori, Erin, Julia, Megan, Jared, Gibson, and Andie.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, December 12 at 11:00 a.m.
St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church
206 9 Ave SW, High River, AB

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Father Marius, Dr. Gordillo, and the dedicated staff of the Emergency and Palliative Care units at the High River Hospital for their compassionate care.

May Frank, who lived a life full of love, service, adventure, and joy, rest in eternal peace.

Advent: A Season of Hope and Renewal

Advent: A Season of Hope and Renewal

As we begin the holy season of Advent, the Church invites us into a time of watchfulness, reflection, and joyful expectation for the coming of Christ. In the spirit of the Jubilee Year proclaimed by Pope Francis last year and set to conclude this December, our Diocese is launching a matching financial campaign for parishes called, Multiply the Hope.

Once our parish has fulfilled all of its financial obligations for the year, every dollar contributed to reduce our parish loan (if your parish has a loan) / to strengthen our repairs and maintenance fund (if your parish does not have a loan) will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to our parish goal. Even after the Jubilee year concludes on December 28 this year, the Diocese has extended this campaign to the end of 2027, giving us additional time to reach our parish goal.

Our goal for this matching program is $88,520.00. This means that every contribution toward this goal has twice the impact, allowing our parish to move forward with greater freedom in strengthening the renewal priorities. As we enter this Advent season, I invite you to pray, to reflect, and to respond generously. Together, let us prepare a strong, welcoming parish home for all who seek Christ. May this season of expectation fill us with hope, and may God complete the good work He has begun in us.
