World Day of Migrants and Refugees – September 28, 2025

On September 28, the Church celebrates the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, a day dedicated to prayer, reflection, and action for all those who have been forced to leave their homes in search of safety, peace, and a better future. This year, the celebration also highlights the deep connection between hope, migration, and mission, as emphasized by Pope Leo XIV in his message for the 111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees.

The modern world faces many challenges that drive migration: wars, violence, injustice, economic inequalities, and climate crises. Millions of men, women, and children are displaced from their homes, often risking their lives along the way. Yet, even in the midst of hardship, migrants and refugees become messengers of hope, showing remarkable courage, resilience, and faith. Like the Israelites who wandered in the desert trusting in God’s guidance, they demonstrate that hope and trust in God can light the path even in the darkest times.

Pope Leo XIV reminds us that migrants are not only recipients of care—they also have a responsibility to contribute positively to the communities and countries that welcome them, helping build mutual respect, trust, and shared prosperity. Likewise, host communities are called to recognize migrants as brothers and sisters, valuing their gifts, supporting their integration, and fostering a spirit of solidarity and hospitality. Through this mutual exchange, both migrants and local communities grow in faith, hope, and human dignity.

The presence of migrants can also revitalize parish life, bring spiritual energy, and promote dialogue between cultures and religions. They remind the Church of its pilgrim nature, journeying toward the heavenly homeland, sustained by the theological virtue of hope. Their daily witness encourages all of us to live more fully our own faith and to see Christ in every stranger we meet.

How we can respond:

  • Pray for migrants and refugees, asking God to sustain their hope and courage.
  • Welcome newcomers with friendship and support, helping them feel at home.
  • Volunteer or donate to local initiatives that assist migrants in practical and spiritual ways.
  • Advocate for policies and actions that respect human dignity, protect the vulnerable, and promote justice.

As Jesus teaches in Matthew 25:35, “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” On this World Day of Migrants and Refugees, let us open our hearts and minds in prayer, service, and solidarity, showing Christ’s love to those seeking refuge, hope, and a new beginning. Together, we can help build communities of faith, hope, and compassion that reflect the Kingdom of God.
