Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
Celebrated on the last Sunday of the liturgical year

This Sunday, we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, which also marks the last Sunday in Ordinary Time in the liturgical calendar. This feast calls us to reflect on the kingship of Christ—not as a ruler of power and domination, but as a King of love, mercy, and justice. Jesus reigns in the hearts of all who follow Him, guiding us with compassion and inviting us to live lives of service, faithfulness, and integrity.

The readings for today remind us that Christ’s kingdom is different from the kingdoms of this world. It is a kingdom of truth, love, and self-giving. In the Gospel, Jesus tells us that He came not to be served, but to serve, and to bring hope to the poor, comfort to the suffering, and salvation to all who believe. As we celebrate the end of the liturgical year, this solemnity challenges us to examine our own lives: Do we acknowledge Christ as the King of our hearts? Are we willing to live according to His example of love, mercy, and humility?

This feast is also a reminder that all creation belongs to Him. Every person, every moment, and every decision in our lives can be offered to His loving care. By recognizing Jesus as the King of the Universe, we are invited to participate in building His kingdom here on earth—a kingdom marked by peace, justice, compassion, and charity. It is a kingdom where the last are first, and the meek are blessed.

As we honor Christ the King today, we also look forward to next Sunday, when the Church begins a new liturgical year with the First Sunday of Advent. Advent is a season of hope and preparation, a time to reflect on Christ’s coming into our world and our lives. Just as Christ reigns in love and humility, we are invited to enter this new year with hearts open to His grace, ready to live more faithfully and to share His light with others.

Practical Reflection:
How can we acknowledge Christ as King in our daily lives? It can begin with simple acts of love and service—reaching out to a neighbor in need, showing patience to family members, or offering time and talents to our parish and community. By putting Christ first in our decisions, words, and actions, we allow His kingship to guide us. Living under His reign is not about power, but about love, humility, and making the world around us a reflection of His kingdom.

Let us celebrate this solemnity with gratitude, joy, and renewed commitment, acknowledging Jesus Christ as our King, our Lord, and the center of our lives.
