Saint Kateri Tekakwitha – “The Lily of the Mohawks”
This month on 17 of April, we will celebrate an extraordinary saint whose life is a shining example of perseverance in faith and love for God – Saint Kateri Tekakwitha.
She was born in 1656 in the Mohawk village of present-day New York, in a family of Native Americans. Her childhood was difficult – she lost her parents at a young age and suffered partial blindness and facial scarring from an illness. Despite these challenges, Kateri learned about Christianity through Jesuit missionaries and eventually received baptism, dedicating her life entirely to God.
Saint Kateri is remembered for her deep prayer life, humility, and devotion to serving others. She lived in simplicity, cared for the sick and needy, and avoided all forms of violence. Her spiritual life was marked by perseverance and love – she was a true witness of the Gospel among her people.
She died at the age of 24 in 1680, and the Church canonized her in 2012, making her the first Native American saint. Saint Kateri Tekakwitha is the patroness of Native Americans, the sick and suffering, and young people learning to live their faith.

Although she lived over 300 years ago, her life still speaks to us today. In a world full of rush, social media, and pressure to look a certain way, Kateri reminds us that true beauty lies in the heart and in our relationship with God. Her commitment to service and care for others inspires us to practice daily acts of kindness – toward family, neighbors, and those in need.
Saint Kateri also teaches us perseverance in faith despite challenges or rejection. In today’s world, where it is easy to feel discouraged or compare ourselves to others, her life shows that living according to Christian values is always worthwhile, even if the world around us seems to overlook them.
